  • The game is immediately playable from the welcome screen. Jump into the chasm to enter the first and second levels.

    • With your keyboard:
      • Move left by pressing the A key or the left arrow key.
      • Move right by pressing the D key or the right arrow key.
      • Use the space bar to jump.
        • Run to build up speed, then press the space bar to jump further.
        • Press the space bar and the down arrow or S key to move down.
      • Use the F4 key to alternate between windowed and full screen modes.

  • Basic rules
    • Getting around
      • Move as far down as you can go.
        • Move to the next screen by jumping toward the opening opposite you.
        • This is usually at the bottom, but is sometimes on the other side.
      • Despite the title, there is an end to the game. It takes a while to get to.
      • Cross check points to save your progress.
      • Avoid fire and other hazards.
      • After you’ve completed the first few levels, you enter another version of the welcome screen level in different colors.
        • The levels are laid out the same, but are harder.
        • Each level now has extra hazards and more enemies.
        • They game repeats about 5 times in total. Each time you finish a set of levels, you complete 20% of the game.
    • Saving your progress and dying
      • To save your progress, move to a check point.
      • Each time you die, you respawn from the last checkpoint you through.
        • The game records the number of times you die in a level.
        • You can see the number of levels you through without dying on the bottom left corner. This resets each time you die.
        • The game shows you the largest number of levels you’ve ed through without dying.
      • The game only saves your progress while you are playing the game.
        • Each time you reload the game, you start at the welcome screen level.

      • Fires
        • If you touch fire, you get burned and die.
        • To avoid fire, you must jump over it. To cross rows of fire, you may need a running start.
      • Lasers
        • Touch a laser and you die.
        • Lasers rotate. To avoid it, simply wait for it to rotate away from where you’re standing.
        • Move quickly to avoid it touching you.
    • Walls
      • Walls with a rough texture let you cling to them.
        • While you’re on a rough wall, you stick to it and slowly slide downward.
        • You can jump off the wall and cling to another to move up. This will allow you to move to places too high for you to reach by jumping.
      • You cannot grab onto walls with a smooth texture.
    • Whirlwinds
      • Whirlwinds take you up without any extra effort. You can move around while in the whirlwind.
      • You must steer away from any hazards to avoid getting killed.
    • Floors
      • Solid floors stop your descent. Most platforms are made of solid floors.
      • Mosaic floors break if you stomp on them twice in rapid succession. If you must jump on them, do so only once & wait a while to jump if you do not want them to break.
      • Portal floors will send you to a different part of the level.
        • These are often portals to other parts of the level or the shaft to exit the level.
        • The portal walls often serve as a non-lethal hazard. Fall into them and you return to another part of the level.
        • Portal walls have dots flowing in where they can suck you in and dots flowing out where they spit you back out.
  • Denizens and foes
    • Various monsters inhabit the world you’re exploring.
    • All monsters are hostile, but not all of them are immediately dangerous.
      • Most monsters are enemies.
        • If you touch them, you die and return to the last check point you went through.
        • Stomp on them to take them out.
        • Each time you return from a check point, the monsters you did take out will also come back to life.
      • Some enemy monsters have flames on their heads.
        • You cannot stomp these enemies. They’re functionally invincible.
        • You must get past these foes rather than confront them directly.
      • Ghosts serve as platforms.
        • If you land on top of them, you will bounce off them unharmed.
        • Hit them from the sides and they will kill you.
        • They often appear in chasms and serve as a moving platform. Time your jumps to use them.
    • Although you gain nothing from killing the monsters, it’s often advantageous to do so.
      • To cross a chasm, you often need space to run. A monster standing in the way will keep you from running the right distance.
      • Monsters may be a big threat in areas with portals, where you can slip and must start over. If they’re allowed to roam, you’ll end up dying and starting over.
      • That said, you can sometimes avoid the monsters without trying to stomp them.
  • Game totals
    • At the end of the game it shows how many screens you cleared consecutively without dying.
      • If you go through the game using the most standard path you can score up to 12.
      • Your score from one can carry over to other es.
      • Each subsequent gets harder.
    • When you play through the game the first time it shows 20%, meaning you have made one of 5 es through the game.
      • On the next play you can continue your prior play, but the level background color changes to black & the game gets harder with more fires in it.
      • After completing the second through the completion screen shows 40% & the background color turns red. On this playthrough more enemies appear on the levels, more fires appear, and more spinning fire sticks appear with longer arms.
      • The fourth through the game shows a lime green background. Again there are more enemies, fires, and more spinning fire bars. In some cases platforms where you could have previously stood are completely covered in fire, forcing you to repeatedly bounce across ghosts to get across some levels. Some of the ridiculous fire jumps and rises also have the skulls moving side to side across them.
      • The fifth and final has a teal and lime background color. Two of the screens have monster faces on them which have a 10-second timer. When those timers reach zero the monster face grows until it engulfs the whole screen.
