The words geek, dork, and nerd are all relatively recent additions to the dictionary based on how we define them today. The word geek is the oldest of the three and used to refer to a type of carnival performer, while the others appeared in the late 20th century. All three words have overlapping meanings and include one or more of the following traits:

• Intellectualism: They’re usually very, very book smart, or at least knowledgeable in one field or another.
• Niche interests: They often have a narrow band of interest in something, be it science fiction, pop culture, or any other hobby (mainstream or otherwise).
• Social awkwardness: Up until recently, most people in this umbrella are loners and introverts who keep to themselves or to very small friend groups. Some have an awkward time socializing and take a little time to get out of their shell. For some folks, it’s part of the appeal.

Usually, these also have a specific set of interests associated with them (roleplaying games, fantasy, video games, comic books, and science fiction come to mind). While they all used to be insulting before, all three have become neutral as society came to embrace many traditionally geeky things. Nerd culture has been celebrated in cult classic movies like the Revenge of the Nerds series & more recently in TV sitcoms like Silicon Valley. As tech has dominated the economy, in media nerds have been depicted in a better light, though have retained a deep rooted social awkwardness.
